Her father was Sir Thomas Callan Macardle, a Catholic who supported home rule in Ireland while her mother was Lucy "Minnie" Macardle, who came from an English Anglican background and was a Unionist in her politics. Her book, The Irish Republic, is one of the more frequently cited narrative accounts of the Irish War of Independence and its aftermath, particularly for its exposition of the anti- treaty viewpoint.ĭorothy Macardle (alternatively spelled McArdle) was born in Dundalk, Ireland, in 1889 into a wealthy brewing family famous for their Macardle's Ale. Associated throughout her life with Irish republicanism, she was a founding member of Fianna Fáil in 1926 and was considered to be closely aligned with Eamon de Valera until her death, although she was vocal critic of how women were represented in the 1937 constitution created by Fianna Fáil. ![]() My mom was in remission from breast cancer and three months after the accident her cancer came back and she passed away in 1981. The devastation of the accident affected my family way beyond 1979. I remember she had just bought a new Pontiac Firebird and I went with her to sign the papers and bring it home. She was studying to be a nurse at South Suburban College at the time of the accident and needed a break from school and the heartbreak of the wedding being called off. She was a sweet and beautiful sister who had many friends. We ended up in church on the 2nd of June for Kathy - for her funeral. They were Gail DeCastro and Rhonda DeYoung, who also perished. To take her mind off the wedding, my mom talked her into going to Hawaii with two other friends. “Kathy was supposed to get married and the date was set for June 2 of that year, but it was called off. We already know the identity of the new villain of Thor 4: Gorr the Butcher God. ![]() ![]() ![]() But after a somewhat disappointing encounter with her first novel, In A Dark Dark Wood (I found the heroine supremely irritating and put it down about a third of the way in), I’ve not picked up another of her books despite the many favourable reviews from fellow readers that indicate she’s a writer who has only developed her novelistic prowess since then. Hailed as a modern day Agatha Christie, she writes the sort of twisty, plot driven crime novels that I ordinarily enjoy. Ruth Ware is one of those writers I’ve always wanted to like. ![]() She must keep going or risk losing everything, even her life… But once she embarks on her deception, there is no going back. Hal makes a choice that will change her life for ever. If anyone has the skills to turn up at a stranger’s funeral and claim a bequest they’re not entitled to, it’s her. There’s no coming out scene, there’s no internalized homophobia. It is, perhaps, a new generation of queer love. Sexuality is part of each character, as it is is for many teenagers, but queerness is treated with the same normalcy as other relationships. Romance is kind of at the heart of this book. ![]() But Ari, like many teenagers, is longing to be somewhere new, away from here. And Hector’s joy for baking makes patience easy, and Ari’s relationship with his parents eases too.Īri’s parents, taken together, are a bit like Yoda, riding around in his backpack telling him to work harder and be more present. Then along comes Hector whose joy for baking is contagious. In this way Bloom is a meditation on patience and slowness and joy. Through the book, and through his journey, he starts to appreciate and enjoy the moments too. He is super impatient to move on to “the next big thing” of moving to the city with his not-quite-fully-formed band. This slowing down parallels the journey of the main character, Ari. And the result is that we slow down to enjoy the moments and moods. They don’t move the plot forward in any obvious way. ![]() The entire book is drawn in black and a beautiful blue-green. Bloom is a graphic novel about a young man in a small town, working in his family’s bakery. ![]() |
